ARTICLE
XXIX.
|
Nominations
and Elections of Unit Chairperson, Unit Secretaries and Shop
Stewards
|
|
Section
1.
Nominations
|
Nominations
of Shop Unit Chairpersons, Shop Unit Secretaries and Shop Stewards
shall take place at the Industry Unit meetings held during the month
of January.
|
|
|
|
|
Section
2.
|
Nominations
shall be made orally in this meeting and any member shall have the
right to place in nomination the name of one person to run for
either the job of Shop Unit Chairperson or Shop Unit Secretary.
|
|
|
|
|
Section
3.
|
No
one member can be nominated to run for both the job of Shop Unit
Chairperson and Shop Unit Secretary.
|
|
|
|
|
Section
4.
|
Nominations
for Shop Stewards shall be made orally in the January meetings and
said Shop Stewards shall be nominated to represent a crew (25
members or major fraction thereof), department, floor, building or
other type of physical location.
|
|
|
|
|
Section
5.
Elections
|
Elections
shall take place at the Shop or Industry meetings held in the month
of February.
|
|
|
|
|
Section
6.
|
Elections
shall be held by secret ballot , if required, and every member
present of the shop or industry unit directly affected shall be
entitled to vote for his/her choice of Shop or Industry Unit
Chairperson and Secretary. Each
member shall be entitled to one vote.

|
|
|
Section
7.
|
The
candidate who receives the greatest number of votes shall be
declared elected.
|
|
|
|
|
Section
8.
|
Before
a vote is taken the Shop Unit Chairperson shall appoint from amongst
the members present two (2) or more members who shall act as tellers
for the purpose of tallying the ballots.
|
|
|
|
|
Section
9.
|
Shop
Stewards shall be elected by vote of those members they were
nominated to represent and such election shall be by secret ballot,
if required. Each
member eligible shall be entitled to one vote.

|
|
|
|
Section
10.
|
The
candidate for Shop Steward receiving the greatest number of votes
shall be declared elected.
|
|
|
|
|
Section
11.
Term of Office
|
Shop
or Industry Unit Chairpersons, Secretaries and Shop Stewards shall
be elected for a period of one (1) year or until replaced unless
they are removed for cause by trial as provided for in these
By-Laws.

|
|
|
Section
12.
|
No
member who is on layoff, leave of absence or on withdrawal card at
the time of nominations or elections of Shop Unit Chairperson, Shop
Unit Secretary or Shop Stewards shall be eligible to be nominated or
elected to such positions.
|
|
|
|
|
Section
13.
|
To
be eligible for nomination or election as a unit officer and/or
steward in this organization, a member must have attended at least
2/3 of his/her regular unit meetings held in the calendar year prior
to his/her nomination. In
addition, if he/she is an incumbent running for re-election to a
unit office and/or steward, he/she must have attended at least 2/3
of the Stewards Council meetings held during his/her current term of
office (March 1 - the last day of February).
Meetings missed because of illness or held during hours of
employment or from which he/she has been excused shall be counted as
meetings attended.
